It costs £15 Billion every year to care for people with dementia. For most economies local population changes mean that without significant change in the pattern of investment, current services will in all likelihood become unaffordable.

Dementia Executive
Mental Health Strategies and our partners Focused_On Ltd have developed Dementia Executive©. This is a strategic tool to support commissioners and their public health colleagues model the impact of service change and so investment. This will enable you to improve value for money and help more people with dementia to live independently or in a care setting appropriate to their needs.
How to use the model: Tiers of intervention
We have used the four tiers of service intervention within the Dementia Executive:
• Information & Self-help
• Early diagnosis and Interventions
• Increased Community-based Support
• Continuing Care (NHS & Residential)
Based on the latest evidence base for prevalence, incidence and costings, Dementia Executive enables you to input your local service characteristics across each of the tiers. Within each of the tiers is room to input up to five different costed interventions or services (such as: Information leaflets, Memory Clinics, or residential care).
Using a range of ‘what if’ scenarios and simulation modelling techniques you will then be able assess the impact of changes to the local population and your current & future investment, to enable you to get the most value for money and to improve services for people with dementia. A key feature of the approach is the way we work with your teams to agree key aspects of the delivery of care process, and how this can be modelled under the various performance scenarios. This means you can test out performance improvement, and what you need to commission or deliver, before the change process begins. As an example, the chart below shows a typical output from the exercise, which is of course supported by comprehensive detailed results.
Delivering World Class Commissioning in Dementia
Modelling is a key competency required for World Class Commissioning. The DH prescribes simulation modelling as a technique which Commissioners of Health & Social Services should use to stimulate & lead this ‘market’ and the UK National Audit Office prescribes a strategy of Invest-to-Save. Commissioners must, therefore, seek high impact Interventions to test & choose between quantified and financially competing strategies.
Our approach provides a tried and tested technological platform. Further, our team of consultants will be on hand for five days to install the system and train you, help you gather the data and work through initial scenarios. However it doesn’t end there, since you are then left with the tool and the training to further use as you wish and safe in the knowledge that we are always on hand to help you, with the skills and techniques to develop even more sophisticated and detailed models if required.
