I have been a consultant forensic psychiatrist since 1992, initially in Hampshire. Over the following 20 years I worked as the Clinical Director of the forensic psychiatry service, Deputy Medical Director, and for nearly 3 years (up to March 2012), as Medical Director of Hampshire Partnership Trust (which became Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust from April 2011). In April 2012 I moved to the Surrey Community Forensic service, where I have worked part time since November 2014. I have experience of working in secure services for adults and adolescents, prisons and community forensic services.
In 2000, my colleagues and I revised the textbook Faulk’s Basic Forensic Psychiatry. I have also taken a number of leadership roles with the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Since changing to part-time working, I have become the Independent Clinical Adviser to the National Oversight Group for High Secure services, I have also led reviews in prisons and mental health services for NHS England and recently, I am a Specialist Member of the Parole Board. With a colleague and working with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, I developed quality standards for prison mental health teams and using the standards, we have developed a Quality Network for these teams.
