I am a psychiatrist for older people, and a family and systemic psychotherapist. My skills include knowledge and understanding of safeguarding, the ability to focus on individual vulnerable adults, working with carers/ families, and Older People’s Mental Health. As a medical practitioner, I am accustomed to identifying key issues and themes and to seeking out and analysing complex information from multiple sources.
I was National Institute Mental Health England Fellow in the aftermath of the ‘Rowan Report’ and involved in the Department of Health response, including coordinating an audit of older people’s mental health services to identify high risk services and arrange any necessary support. I worked as a consultant old age psychiatrist in secondary care services in the North West and Midlands for a number of years, and currently provide primary care memory clinics in Gnosall, Staffordshire. I have experience of risk assessment and care planning for people with mental health problems in later life in community care, in-patient care and home treatment. I act as Independent Chair/ Author in Domestic Homicide Reviews and Local Case Reviews, and have led two Invited Reviews on behalf of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. I am currently producing a thematic review of safeguarding practice for an investigation relating to care experienced by families in the South of England. My PhD focused on service user and carer participation in old age psychiatry and I have a long-standing interest in patient and carer participation in services. Currently I am also working on a research project analysing domestic homicide reviews involving older adults, as part of my role as Visiting Professor of Mental Health and Ageing at the University of Chester.
I now work for Older Mind Matters Ltd (for more details of my work see www.oldermindmatters.com).
