I am presently working as an ‘expert by experience’ for the North West based third sector organisation known as Pathways, involved in the NHS Care and Treatment Review (CTR) program within the NHS Transforming Care agenda. Previous to this work I was involved as an ‘expert by experience’ in the CQC Inspection program that followed the Winterbourne View scandal, my work there being organised and managed by the Challenging Behaviour Foundation (CBF). I was requested to complete this work based upon the years that I was the unpaid chair of the charitable organisation IPSEA (Independent Panel of Special Education Advice), offering free practical and legal advice to families and professionals navigating the complex world of the Law, Disability and Education.
I am lucky enough to have a son, daughter and grandchildren – both my son and daughter have jobs and good lives – but one of them has non- specific brain damage leading to a profound learning disability. With support from many good people, my family has pioneered the concept and practice of inclusive education, direct payments and independent living for people with a learning disability, including the development of self-directed support.
I am very aware that families like mine depend upon a good formal and informal support network, my present interest is therefore sharing information about and developing Enduring Circles of Support.
